Order of Service

Call to Worship: 1 Chronicles 16:28-34

Hymns:

Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart

I Will Sing of the Mercies

Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Forgiveness:

Gracious God, we confess that we have longed too much for the comforts of this world. We have loved the gifts more than the giver. In your mercy, help us to see that all the things we pine for are finite, while you are infinite; that they are quicksand, while you are solid ground; that they are shifting, while you are steadfast.  On the merits of Jesus Christ, we plead your forgiveness. Accept his worthiness for our unworthiness, his sinlessness for our transgressions, his fullness for our emptiness, his glory for our shame, his righteousness for our dead works, his death for our life. We pray in Jesus’s name. Amen.

Hymn: Blessed Jesus, at Your Word

Scripture Readings:

Matthew 11:25-30

2 Thessalonians 1:3-12

Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit; born of the virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate: was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended to the dead; the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic* church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Small-c catholic refers to the church universal—God’s people in all times and places—not the capital-C Roman Catholic church.
